Carmen stood at her rickety desk and played softly on her violin. The music flowing seemlessly out from the small intstrument. She sighed and put it down, what use was it if no one would hire her. She opened the beautiful music box on her desk and sang with the tune it played.

Owen slipped out of the music box, listening to the girl play. He looked around, incredibly confused, before suddenly remembering that he had been in the music box... A look of sadness washed over his face.

Carmen stopped singing as she sensed another presence in her small apartment. She looked over at the music box and saw a man in a suit standing next to her desk, he looked so sad. "Hello? Who are you?"

Owen looked up at the girl's eyes. "My name is Owen," he said. "I-" he looked at the music box. "I'm not quite sure how I got here today."

Carmen tilted her head. "Carmen." She held out her hand uncertainly, did ghosts actually shake hands? "Why do you look so sad?"

Owen looked at her hand and tried to grab it, but he went right through. He looked up at Carmen when she asked him why he was sad. "I don't seem to remember," he said. "but I know I should be upset about... something."

Carmen lowered her hand. She nodded. "Alright. Well...I won't press you then." She smiled Well, it's sort of an audience. "You know, I've never done a private performance before." She laughed. "Any requests?"

Owen looked thoughtful and distant. "Perhaps you know... Some Enchanted Evening? Or After the Ball?"

Carmen smiled. "I know Some Enchanted Evening. My mother taught it to me." She cleared her throat briefly and found the old tune and notes. "Some enchanted evening You may see a stranger, you may see a stranger Across a crowded room And somehow you know, You know even then That somewhere you'll see her Again and again.
Some enchanted evening Someone may be laughin', You may hear her laughin' Across a crowded room And night after night, As strange as it seems The sound of her laughter Will sing in your dreams.
Who can explain it? Who can tell you why? Fools give you reasons, Wise men never try.
Some enchanted evening When you find your true love, When you feel her call you Across a crowded room, Then fly to her side, And make her your own Or all through your life you May dream all alone.
Once you have found her, Never let her go. Once you have found her, Never let her go!" She sighed when she was done. "Was that alright? I know it wasn't perfect but I hope it was at least a little good."

Owen nodded, taking a deep breath. Tears shone in his eyes. "That was beautiful..." he said. "I think it means something to me." He looked up at Carmen. "Where did you learn to play so beautifully?"

Carmen smiled. "I don't really know...I've always been good at it. I mean, I took lessons when I was younger, but something else always seemed to have a stronger influence on my music than my teacher's lessons." She shrugged. "Music is part of me, in my blood I guess."

Owen nodded as she spoke. "That's amazing," he said. He glided about a foot higher than he use to be, then moved to the window. "Where are we?" he asked.

Carmen smiled. "Chicago, Illinois. In a cheap appartment building near downtown. Living close to music centers saves me the expense of owning a car." She sighed. "Although it's not like anyone's willing to hire me, not even the crummy dinner theaters..."

Owen tilted his head. "Why wouldn't someone hire you? I doubt many..." he searched for the word. "modern people would know such a song as Some Enchanted Evening."

Carmen shrugged. "I'm an unknown. No one wants to hire an unknown. It's too much of a buisness risk. An unknown artist might not pack in crouds the way a known performer will. Some won't even let me audition." She sighed. "It's depressing really, not being able to find a good gig. I've been working part-time at a restaurant since I got here."
